500 Days of Bow Ties

February 17th, 2012 | Posted by RTY in People in Bowties - (132 Comments)

Boy meets girl.

Girl breaks boy’s heart.

Boy gets his swagger back.

Girl lives a life of regret.

We want to give a huge huge shout to our boy Aaron Cocjin over at 500 Days of Bow Ties.

After a breakup, Aaron set out to get his groove back by committing to rocking a bow tie for 500 days straight.

We’re completely humbled with his choice to choose us for day 480.  We wish we’d met him sooner!

I’ve worn a bow tie since I was in preschool. When I wear a bow tie, I feel like a million bucks. In October 2010, my girlfriend broke up with me. The difficult experience made me want to go back to the things that made me truly happy – reacquainting with old friends, being physically active, and of course wearing bow ties. So I thought, “Why not wear a bow tie for as long as possible. A month is too short. A year would go by way too fast. 500 days? 500 is an outlandishly even number. Boom!

Boom is right.   And as he says, “Live Beautifully.”

Check him out at his site or see what he’s up to on Twitter.

Gizmodo’s Take on the Bow Tie

February 17th, 2012 | Posted by RTY in Uncategorized - (32 Comments)

In a follow up to their article on geeky glasses, Gizmodo’s writers take on the bow tie with their commentary on “geeks, fashion, and fashionable geeks.”  We can’t say we agree with them on all their points, but definitely worth a read:

One theory expressed by Warren St. John in a 2005 New York Times was that wearing a bow tie is “a way of broadcasting an aggressive lack of concern for what other people think.” But isn’t it just the opposite? You don a bow tie precisely because it sends a message. Like geeky glasses, a bow tie is “in your face.”

What do you think?  Check out their article here:

Their Mardi Gras guide is definitely required reading for the upcoming season.

“Insanely great.”

Finally, the lights dimmed, and Steve Jobs appeared at a podium on the left side of the stage. He was resplendent in a finely tailored black suit complete with a prominent bow tie, looking more like a Las Vegas impresario than a computer industry executive. You could tell that he was nervous as he quieted the rousing applause and began to speak.

Yoshi’s Blend

“When you consider that the human sound is also a wave and it could have impact as strong as  tsunami to change the life of people.  As you say something, and that really changes people- the way how they live, they way how they, you know, regard their life as it is.  So the human voice is, I would say, is stronger than tsunami.”

A short film featuring Yoshi Masuda- one man making a contribution to his local community devastated by the earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan.  In a scene replete with destruction he aims to inject a sense of normalcy and morale because what’s more normal than sippin’ on a cup of joe and listening to records?

The Impossible Cool

A largely monochromatic homage to the regal and majestic, The Impossible Cool features some of the more heralded style icons as well as timeless advice for the well-dressed man.  The site is impressive in its simplicity and provides a nice pulse check on where one might be at with their own sartorial efforts.

And what would you know- some of these cats are in bow ties!

We’d like to think that our bow ties can make cool just a hair less impossible…

It’s sad that American institutions like the Men’s Barber shop are going the way of the dinosaur.

We’re stoked to see such a celebration of an old standby  and the Director getting a lot of Film Festival love as a result.

It’s no secret we’re big supports of Movember and moustachios in general.

It’s hard to tell from the image if they’ve gotten New Orleans right, but it looks like it’s represented.  We may have to pick this up to make sure!
